Security Incident at Instructure (Canvas)

Bruin Learn (Canvas) access has been restored. Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, has confirmed that its global cybersecurity incident has been contained and remediated. In coordination with the UC Office of the President, we have determined, based on the latest available information, that Instructure’s system is ready for campus use.

On May 1, Instructure, the company that provides UCLA’s Canvas learning management system, Bruin Learn, reported a cybersecurity incident affecting parts of its platform and customer environments.

On May 7, a different service disruption affected access to Bruin Learn (Canvas) at UCLA and institutions all over the world. Out of an abundance of caution, the University of California Office of the President instructed all UC locations to temporarily block or redirect Canvas access. Access will not be restored until UC and campus technology leaders are confident the system is secure.

As of May 9, Bruin Learn (Canvas) access is restored. Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, has confirmed that its global cybersecurity incident has been contained and remediated. In coordination with the UC Office of the President, we have determined, based on the latest available information, that Instructure’s system is ready for campus use.

As of May 9, Bruin Learn (Canvas) access is restored.

At this time, UCLA has no indication that course content, assignments or grades in Bruin Learn were affected. UCLA and UC technology teams are continuing to review platform and data integrity.

Instructure has stated that some personal information was involved in the May 1 incident. At this time, UCLA has not received information from Instructure confirming what, if any, UCLA-specific data was impacted.

Instructure has stated there is currently no evidence that passwords were compromised in this incident. At this time, UCLA has no indication that campus account credentials were affected.

No action is required at this time. If that changes, UCLA will notify affected users directly.

The Bruin Learn Center of Excellence is hosting office hours assistance for instructors on Monday at 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.mLocal IT representatives are also being provided information and guidance on how to assist faculty with troubleshooting course settings or third-party tools, with an initial focus on tools that affect grading or assessments.

Students should closely monitor messages from their instructors and UCLA’s official update pages for guidance. If students have questions about assignments, course materials or deadlines, they should contact their instructors. Canvas has restored initial functionality to the platform. In alignment with UC guidance, UCLA is performing security assurance, configuration, and integrity checks before re-enabling access. An announcement on platform restoration will be shared when a decision has been made. Please leverage the instructional continuity resources on the Teaching & Learning Center site to support teaching until further notice.

There is currently an outage with Canvas (Bruin Learn and UCLA Extension Canvas).. Digital & Technology Solutions is aware of the issue and our vendor is working toward a resolution. We are aware of the reported global cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the vendor behind Canvas (Bruin Learn). We are actively monitoring vendor updates and assessing any potential impact to UCLA services.

At this time, UCLA has not been notified of any direct impact to our campus. Bruin Learn remains available and operational.

Updates will be posted on our Security Advisory Page (This Page) and Service Status Page.

Some third-party tools may experience interruptions as vendors make precautionary changes in response to Instructure system updates. If any UCLA-integrated tools are impacted, we will communicate directly with affected users.

DTS and Bruin Learn administrators are continuing to monitor the incident and test for any impacts within UCLA’s Canvas environment. We will share updates as more information becomes available.

Instructure recently experienced a cybersecurity incident perpetrated by a criminal threat actor. Instructure is actively investigating this incident with the help of outside forensics experts.
